How to use the calculator

  1. Make a swatch with the same yarn, hook, stitch and technique as the project. Measure and weigh the same dry swatch.
  2. Enter rectangular section dimensions. For a tube, use circumference as width. For different sections, calculate each separately and add their gram estimates before rounding skeins for each yarn type.
  3. Use the grams and meters per skein on the yarn label used for the swatch. Skeins are rounded up; purchase surplus is separate from the extra allowance.

How is it calculated?

Base weight = (width × height × number of pieces) ÷ (swatch width × swatch height) × swatch weight. Add the allowance percentage. Meters = required grams ÷ grams per skein × meters per skein. Skeins = required grams ÷ grams per skein, rounded up.

This estimate assumes the same fabric technique and gauge. Round bases, straps, lids, borders and accessories are not automatically included. It does not split yarn by color; tapestry swatches should reflect the yarn-carrying technique.
